There is always so much pleasure in reading le Carré. All his novels combine a wonderful element of both plausibility and readability. It is a remarkable insight into how the world of covert intelligence and government agencies work. Much happens behind the scenes that the public (and even insiders) would never be reasonably aware of. Part of le Carré's genius lies in depicting good ordinary people seeking to do their best in the face of adversity and corruption. Le Carré also remains relevant. It is as enjoyable reading a modern novel such as this as it is one of his Cold War classics. This page-turner that begins in Gibraltar and takes in both Cornwall and London was read in two sittings, two sessions, albeit both long train journeys. A brilliant climax with some but not full resolution, 9.5/10.
