A memorable epic that explores the themes of family, race and identity in an original and humane way. Set in the Deep South over four decades (1950s to 1980s), and encompassing three family generations, the crux of the novel centres on the diverging lives of twin sisters Stella (perhaps in homage to Tennessee Williams?) and Desiree. Both leave the claustrophobia of their hometown in search of better lives. Desiree, however, returns home, while Stella "passes" as white and begins a new life of artifice and pretence. The stories join when their respective daughters (one black and one white) are forced to recognise their kinship and the secrets that have hitherto influenced their lives. Bennett weaves a deft and convincing story and draws the reader with anticipation to the conclusion. A reunion seems inevitable, but this is not necessarily the same thing as a reconciliation. This is great storytelling, and part of Bennett's genius is that she never seems to judge her characters. They are more real as a result. I was sad when this ended. A top ten candidate.
